Seven accused members of German far-left organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
