Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show draws close, there’s always a clamor to include fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
