This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical biological terror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that arise in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
